Dual camera smartphones | What's all the fuss about?
I guess you've seen some smartphones with 2 cameras on the rear (like HTC m8, HTC m9, LG G5, Huawei P9 and P9+ and many more) or maybe on the front ( like lg v10). They usually tell you that apparently, it gives better images. Its true to some extent, but how?
First thing you should know is that both camera sensors need not operate together all the time. For a regular snap, only one of the 2 cameras is used; just like any other regular smartphone.
The additional sensor, which usually has a lower megapixel count but larger pixel size, is used when some extra details are required. Like more dynamic range, or in poor lighting conditions to get better details, or maybe to get an awesome depth of field( called 'bokeh' effect).
Having an additional sensor on the phone doesn't always guarantee a footage, with mind blowing clarity. Like in the case of the old favorite HTC M8; the camera wasn't 'that' good. Low light shots were smudgy and were lacking details, despite of having a secondary sensor to help out.
Huawei P9 |
But that doesn't mean it's a total gimmick either. Like the new Huawei P9 and P9 plus have dual cam setup manufactured by Leica. A top player camera department. It uses one normal sensor and another monochrome sensor which should help to capture more light, and it does. It's one of the best smartphone cameras out there today. You can also use only the monochrome sensor to click some epic black-N-white photos and be an instagram spartan๐.
Under rated flagship of 2016 |
Even the LG V20 and the Huawei mate 9 have amazing cameras. The V20 has a regular sensor along with a 135 degree wide anlged sensor. It's suer useful for those wide filed views, that you might want to capture in a single shot. It's similar to the LG G5 which is to say, awesome.
The battery champ of 2016 |
The mate 9 uses similar setup as the P9 family. One is a standard 12 mp sensor and the other one is a 20 mp monochrome sensor. The secondary sensor allows the Mate to perform a new kind of crop zooming, called as hybrid zoom. This essentially zooms into the image, up to 6x, using the larger 20 mp sensor and then, fills colors into it from the original 12 mp shot. This allows the phone to capture zoomed images, preserving that same 12 mp resolution! That's pretty dope, if you ask me.
A fruity surprise! |
The most surprising entry to this realm was of course, the iPhone 7 plus. I never expected a backwater company like Apple to plunge into such a risky nut cool hardware zone. Then again, it is
So to conclude; are dual cam setups great to have? Yeah, it's cool if you got it. But is it a decision changing "hardware of the future"? Nope. Even though you get all the above mentioned jazz, it's not worth choosing one phone over the other just because of another camera ring on the back๐๐.
